The 4 Person Tent – When You Need “Something” To Rely On

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

WE WANT THE ADVENTURE THAT WILL TOP IT ALL. Classes are set to resume.  All we have to show this summer are some scars and bumps playing basketball. Not a good story to boast on your college classmates. ”Why don’t we go and shoot the rapids?”, suggested my friend. Now, that will be the perfect centerpiece of our story telling tales when we go back to school. Together with my 2 closest friends, Gerry and Neil, we set out to conquer the rapids. We have our gears and clothes all packed and ready to go. One thing is for sure, we are taking my 4 person tent in this trip.

The place is situated in a far-flung area, near the boondocks. The road was bumpy. We were jarred to the teeth since the car’s suspension system seems non-existent. We are going up this high incline when suddenly, it rained. The road became muddy and slippery in an instant. We suddenly felt ourselves falling downward. Our fall was further aggravated when our tire hit a rock. All we know is that our car finally stopped – upside down.

Our situation is not good but at least we survived. The storm has broken. But these are the only good news. All of us suffered broken bones. I ruptured an arm, while Gerry crack one of his legs. Suffering most is Neil. He was unconscious and at least it saved him from the pain of his fractured leg. Although we could move about, we know, we’re in bad condition.

Dire as it is, we cannot afford to panic. Somehow our first-aid training came into fold cause we were able to patch ourselves. Luckily, the 4 person tent was not damaged by the fall. It was very painful but we were able to set up the 4 person tent. We drag Neil inside, then the two of us brought our gears and foodstuff inside. The rain have started again by the time we are finished and seems to be stronger by the minute. The 4 person tent offered warmth and comfort once inside. We really felt grateful. The canvas of the tent is holding its own against the strong rain and gusty winds.

All we can do is sit tight and pray that help comes in our way. Help finally arrived two days after. A patrolling forest ranger saw our multi-colored 4 person tent and immediately headed a rescue team. We cried a sigh of relief when we saw the rescue team. For once, we thought we are all going to die up here.

We were airlifted and brought to the local hospital. The injuries we took, although very severe, has no permanent consequences, and we are very thankful for it. Time is a great healer. We only have God to give thanks to, for surviving our ordeal. Back at school, we all got our wish. We had the greatest escapade in our life. For all intent and purpose, we don’t want any repeat performance of our “greatest escapade”.

The Atmos 50 Backpack For The Outdoors

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

The Osprey Atmos 50 backpack is a great size for light backpacking experiences. It holds 3000 cubic inches while itself it only weighs about three and a half pounds. You will be able to carry all the gear you need with comfort and ease. The floating pocket on top and traditional top loading design, along with the double front pockets will make loading especially easy. It’s a strong and light travel pack, that has even been tested for weeks-long treks in Europe and Asia by consumers.

The Atmos 50 went through the cold London temperatures and the immense intense of India, one right after the other. It handles a real good sum of gear, and the stitching is plenty tough to keep any odd shaped items inside that may poke you. If you’ve never carried a conforming backpack before, this pack will feel different at first, until your back becomes accustomed to the ergonomically correct design. The shoulder straps are quite comfortable, and they don’t dig into your shoulders. The adjustments will keep the weight off your shoulders and hips, and allocate evenly, which means no hot spots. The lining is mesh, and it maintains stability while keeping the pack a bit away from your back, for proper ventilation. The mesh is securely made, and allows for water bladder storage.

Hikers find a lot of pro’s and very downside con’s when they try out the Osprey Atmos 50 backpack. If you have carried larger packs before, you may imagine you’ll have to leave some gear behind, but disbelief – you won’t! The way this backpack is designed will permit you to fit in the gear that would usually take a larger pack to hold. The three front pockets are impressive, for how much they can really store. The other two zippered pockets on the Osprey Atmos 50 Hiking backpack look small at first glance, but once you open them, you will see that you can stow quite a bit of gear in them. The pioneering Osprey design means that even if the main compartment is full, the pockets still zip open and closed without difficulty. There is lots of room for maps, cameras, or whatever you need to stow away for your hike. The pack is well-engineered, and more comfortable than other backpacks you’ve carried.

Leveraging Kan ban For Metal Fabricators

Friday, July 30th, 2010

What is Kan ban?

Kan ban means “visual card” in Japanese and was developed by Toyota.  Kan ban helps organizations employ just-in-time (JIT) production.   It is used as a cue that is emitted through the supply chain to tell others when a supply is needed.  For example, if a card is put at the bottom of a box of supplies with data about the supply on it, the staff member that uses up the last of that box of supplies takes the card and sends it on to the supply manufacturing area so that more can be ordered.  More are only ordered when the previous supply is used up.

Kan ban is called a pull system in the production arena.  Pull refers to demand.  New supplies are ordered only when a demand for them is necessary. Cards are not the sole method of new supplies being ordered.  If a box or pallet runs out of supplies it contained, for example, the empty carton or pallet can cue that a new order needs to be put in place.
There are metal fabricators that will assist businesses that purchase from them develop Kan ban systems.  This will allow a business to only have to have the manufacturer produce a product when needed and have a JIT system.

Kan ban Benefits

Some Kan ban system benefits include inventory control so it is always lean and low turnover raw materials are minimized. Productivity is increased when inventory turnover is maximized.  Floor space need is lessened because it is not necessary to host a substantial inventory.  Production lead time is improved upon and customer response is improved since the whole production plan is based on client needs.

How Does Kan ban Apply in the Real World?

In our organization, Maloya, we successfully leveraged the Kan ban system. This was done by a series of methods.  One strategy was to use carts that were arranged with the specific parts needed to build a product.    Each cart was filled with all of the part numbers and parts to build one of the heaters as well as photographs of the pieces required.  Through this format of organization, the welders could manufacture the product and not have to spend their valuable time looking for and gathering all the needed parts to build the product.  When the cart was empty, this acted as the Kan ban visual cue or card that the cart required to be refilled, or supplies needed to be replenished.  Any inventory differences would also be discovered previous to production.

The Kan ban visual cue for production of the heater is when the first substantial component is produced, which is the outer shell of the heater.  The staff in production will notice the substantial outer shell and understand that they are to produce a heater.  In this Kan ban visual curing system, a scheduling system is not needed as the employees understand by what they see what they should be building.  When they see the availability of a component, it sets off a chain reaction of a series of specific activities, setting off the heater production cycle.

As part of the Kan ban system, Maloya also utilized an inventory tagging procedure. In this system, red tags meant that a material was supplied by a client.  Green tags meant the material was for inventory.  Yellow was a tag for a material that was bought for specific orders.  This tagging further improved the efficiency of the process.

A color-coded system was also used on the shop floor for work order travelers.  The colors signal to the staff on the floor information about the product.  For example, blue would be a basic component that is produced and shipped.  Orange would indicate a component for sub-assemblies, yellow is for sub-assembly parts and black is for final assembly.

Kan ban is an effective way to have fewer inventories on the floor.  It also is efficient in signaling to staff what to build next.  As long as everybody understands the Kan ban formula, it can help streamline work flow in a manufacturing environment.
