The History That Formed The Caribbean

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Everybody dreams of a Caribbean getaway. For those who want to sit back and enjoy palm trees and the island sun, the Caribbean is the perfect spot. But other than just the sand and the sun, the Caribbean also offers a great historical and cultural site.Caribbean history is very rich and colorful. The festive atmosphere in the islands stands proof to that.

The Caribbean can well be considered as a melting pot of various cultures.Native culture blended in with that of the European settlers. The natives of the Caribbean were nomadic hunters. They were soon followed by waves of other tribes like the Arawak.A lot of other settlers were lured by the richness of the islands.

Nonetheless, the history of the Caribbean won’t be complete devoid of Christopher Colombus. When he set out to explore the world, he reached the Bahamas in 1942.All the while he thought that he landed in Asia.Searching for gold, he explored the rest of the Caribbean. He found very little gold but he was awed by the majestic nature that filled the islands. He claimed several territories under the Spanish crown.Soon after was the emergence of the age of exploration.A lot of other European explorers set foot in the Caribbean and mingled with the natives.

Today the Caribbean culture gives a perfect blend of native cultures and the European influences.A touch of Hispanic, British and Dutch culture can be seen all over the islands. The festive and colorful ambiance of the Caribbean could be attributed to its tropical climate and the geography of the region.

In terms of language the most distinct in the islands is creole. It is a co-mixture of the native languages and European languages like French. It arose from the need of the native slaves to communicate to their European masters.Caribbean history has it that using the creole language was previously forbidden because it is associated with slavery. But nowadays, many are trying to promote the use of Creole as it is one colorful language that speaks of the rich history and culture of the Caribbean.

Greece Hotels And My Love For The Country.

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Renowned for its equable climate, historical ruins and an amazing array of islands, Greece is the ideal holiday destination par excellence. The welcoming Greece hotels, the warm, crystal-clear seas and the sun beating down whilst I walked on the warm sands, all helped to persuade me that Greece was my ideal holiday destination. So, allow me to divulge about my continued affair of Greek adoration.

The Acropolis in Athens is just one of the many historical treasures in this modern, vibrant city. An impressive and beautiful building that enthrals everyone that sees it, the Acropolis is sited 150 metres above sea-level. My love affair with Greece began on that magical night when I stood next to the Acropolis and watched the lights of Athens twinkling below and I knew then that I didn’t want to be anywhere else.

Still infatuated with Greece and staying at one of the many Cyprus hotels in the country, I realise that this third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea takes some beating. It has the warmest climate in this Mediterranean part of the EU and boasts sub-tropical weather. Definitely not a destination that will disappoint, this place is completely steeped in history with many sites, such as the Apollo Ilatis and the Neolithic village of Khirokitia, just waiting to be explored.. Not to mention one of my own personal clinchers - the MS Zenobia. This beautiful and impressive underwater wreck was named by The Times as one of the top ten dive sites in the world.

Finally to finish my love letter to Greece, I present Santorini. Created by a volcanic eruption some 3600 years ago, at the height of the Minoan civilization, it now protrudes from the sparkling Aegean waters. It’s so picturesque with its quaint white-washed houses and the capital, Fira has such stunning panoramic views, that you’d like to stay here for ever. I’m not alone in my love and admiration for Greece as in 2011, it was voted the world’s best island, attracting 16 million tourists last year who booked into Greece hotels.

Enjoy The Fall Foliage

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. After months of long, hot days and sultry nights, the cooler days of autumn are highly anticipated.  It means the kids head back to school.  Football games start up once more.  We start planning our yearly Halloween gathering and trick-or-treating.  And best of all, we look forward to the beauty and hues of the leaves changing from their dark green to their golden yellow, bright red and brilliant orange.

Many believe that the northeast U.S. is one of the finest areas in the country for observing the autumn leaves. One great, but lesser known location for enjoying fall colors is Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, CO. The area is know for its stands of aspen trees. Their golden shades are a magnificent contrast to the brilliant azure skies and the white, snow covered peaks.

Driving through this park, the colorful aspen trees just surround you.  From the car, take in the magnificence of the fall leaves. Watch for the wildlife, like elk, fox, and mountain goats, that are often seen in the area.

When you park your car, you can explore any number of trails. Some of these lead up into the mountains where you can enjoy more spectacular views of the fall foliage. One highly recommended hike is along the trail leading to “The Pool.” It may be one of the most stunning places on the planet for fall colors.  The views along the trail, and from some of the ridges are breathtaking.

The best time to see the changing of the leaves in Rocky Mountain National Park is usually late September. The leaves are at peak color at that point, and and only a few leaves have fallen off.  Even if arrive early you will certainly be able to see the beautiful colors.  If you go the first week of October, the leaves will be at peak color, but some leaves will have already dropped, so the trees start to look a little thin by then.

Anywhere you travel this fall, always bring your camera. You will want to remember some of the most gorgeous sights on the earth.  Taking photos of the fall foliage is best done in the middle of the day.  This will totally illuminate the colors on the trees, and set off the clear blue skies.  If the winds are calm, set your photo mode for landscape. This way, the longer exposure time will provide better colors.

After the season ends, you will be able to look at the pictures and vividly remember your trip to Rocky Mountain National Park and the beautiful fall colors you saw.
