Mexico Today: Life After The Hurricane And The Effect On Mexico Hotels

In 2005, the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, which includes Cancun and the beaches of the Riviera Maya was hit by Hurricane Wilma, the most intense Atlantic Basin hurricane on record. Damage to the region, including Mexico hotels, houses and buildings, was estimated at $7.5 million – making it one of the most costly hurricanes ever recorded.

Several people died throughout the region and it suffered from despair and desolation during the aftermath of the storm. Due to the damage throughout the area, tourists avoided travelling to it and Mexico hotels throughout the region felt a major impact from the storm.

2006 Restoration Attempt
In 2006, the first restoration attempt failed to take the proper erosion and maintenance prevention measures. The refurbished beach extensions promptly vanished into the surf, because of this. To develop a sustainable plan for the restoration, the government promptly consulted with internationally renowned environmentalists and engineers.

2009 Beach Restoration Project
In November 2009, the government-funded beach recovery project began with the delivery of over 6.1 million cubic meters of sand to areas throughout the region. A number of well-designed preventive measures were brought about because of the government’s $71 million dollars in the project.   The team’s goal was to restore the beaches, but also to provide long-term ecological stability. For example, areas which were hit especially hard by the waves, now have large cement cubes placed as a buffer to soften the waves before they hit the shore. Large dredger ships actually mined sand from under the ocean floor and moved it to the beaches via large pipelines. With a high density compared to regular sand leading to less volume loss due to erosion from storms and the fact that it remains cool even when exposed to the heat of the sun, makes it desirable.

Mexico Beaches Today
With the restoration of their amazing beaches, Mexico regained its popularity as a world-famous beach resort. Beautiful and tourist-friendly, some Mexico hotels now boast a beach depth of over 300 feet. The large number and type of Mexico hotels and resorts available ensure that there is something to fit every holidaymaker’s budget. All inclusive packages to Mexico that include air fare, meals and lodging are an especially attractive way for many visitors to enjoy the best Mexican hotels and amenities. A travel budget can easily be stretched on Mexico’s affordability, whether you want to simply lie on the beach while sipping a cool drink or play golf and participate in a broad array of sports.
