Eurostar passengers stranded in London

Tens of thousands of passengers have been stranded or delayed due to Eurostar train breakdowns over the recent wintery weekend. As many as 55,000 travelers have had their journeys disrupted by no less than six train break downs.

Eurostar have reported that although their trains have been reliable for over 15 years the abnormally acute weather conditions in northern France have caused the problems that have been experienced. Eurostar say that they have identified the technical issue and that they are now taking steps to remedy the issue.

It is reported that as many as 2000 passengers were trapped in the Channel tunnel on broken down trains. Some are reported to have spent as much as 16 hours confined in their trains below the English Channel. Many have reported a lack of information and no food and no water on the stranded trains. Some people even abandoned their trains and walked through the dark tunnel which extends for 24 miles under the sea.

Many passengers are very unhappy with the way that Eurostar have managed the problems although the train operator has issued apologies and offers of compensation and refunds. Some passengers are reported to have suffered from panic attacks and others have experienced the effects of claustrophobia. Many have complained about the lack of information, food, water and support.

Many people, 31,000 on Saturday and a further 27,000 on Sunday, were stranded due to train cancellations.

Continuing bad weather has disrupted flights from many British airports. Wether forecasters have warned that even more snow is on its way and this will mean further travel disruption as people embark on their Christmas holidays. Police in Scotland have advised travelers not to travel unless their journey is absolutely essential.
