Harris Vacations And Some Useful Info

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Is your family deliberating about having a vacation in the British Isles? Even though nearly all people having a vacation in Britain decide to stay in popular places like London, others prefer to have a vacation in Scotland. In the article below I discuss the Isle of Harris and why it is such a fantastic destination for vacations.

While London may be home to some of the most fascinating museums and galleries in Great Britain  and some of the world’s most famous visitor attractions  the capital of England will not appeal to everyone.

Some tourists much prefer more relaxed, and far less hectic, vacations and other folk much prefer vacations with a little more action for example sporting vacations. Interestingly the island of Harris, in Scotland’s Western Isles, is superb for both kinds of tourist.

Like a great many others sun bathing on the beach for the whole of my summer vacation isn’t my idea of the perfect vacation. Please don’t misunderstand me, my family and I often spend time on beaches, and the Isle of Harris certainly is home to some of the most incredible beaches in Britain, however, I also like to spend time visiting other places while on vacation. I thoroughly enjoy taking in the atmosphere, I also like to experience the local culture and especially enjoy sampling the food. If the truth is to be known each year I enjoy visiting new places and I go to great lengths trying to find something or somewhere totally different. Most probably this is why I enjoy visits to the island in the Hebrides known as the Isle of Harris and why I regularly choose to book a self catering house on the Isle of Harris.

One of the main reasons people travel to the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the landscape and culture of the islands. The Isle of Harris culture has, over hundreds of years been subtly influenced by the English, Scottish, Celtic and Norse races. These days the vast majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and although some speak English, it is often their 2nd language. The Harris people are amongst the friendliest in the world and the hospitality is known across the world. The people of the Isle of Harris are incredibly proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and try very hard to keep the place tidy so it is incredibly important to minimise your own mess.

It is incredibly important to keep in mind that discarded rubbish doesn’t just make the place look unsightly it is also highly dangerous to wild creatures.

A further point to know is that the roads on the Isle of Harris are not the same as elsewhere in Scotland or the UK single track roads are very common and you will need to know how to use passing places to safely let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. Just keep it in mind that you come to a halt on the left. If the vehicle wishing to get past you is large and the passing place is on your right hand side you can pull up into it to let the said vehicle pass easily but be careful not to end up off the road too much.

I hope that the above article sufficiently interests you in taking a vacation on Harris. Large numbers of tourists the Western Isles of Scotland decide to stay in two places. There are a number of other islands to visit including North Uist, South Uist and Lewis. Why not think about staying in a Isle of Harris self catering house for a short while and then book a room in a hotel on North Uist or a South Uist hotel for the rest of your holiday?

Enjoy a Holiday At the Bangaram Island Resort

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The Island Hideaway of Bangaram island resort is some 200 miles from Kerala to the south west of India in the Arabian Sea, and is an example of the Lakshadweep Islands. Routinely it is accessed by a flight from Cochin to Agatti, then onward by boat for a 90 minute ride. Getting onto the ship at Agatti is an experience in itself, as you get onto a raft, and then they tow you out to the boat!! You straight away feel this is a true hideaway vacation, and your tropical island resort is going to be slightly different. Take good recommendation and fly Kingfisher and not Indian Airlines for reliability.

It is the perfect romantic honeymoon getaway, a lush green empty island covered in coconut groves, and formed like a teardrop. It is surrounded by spotless white sand and a massive lagoon, and is a component of a coral atoll with another three islands, all of which can simply be reached form Bangaram, by outboarding, sailing or rowing, kayaking or windsurfing if you find the need to be energetic.

It is probably the Maldives were before mass tourism arrived, because the coral reefs are ablaze with colour and packed with fish because as yet they are relatively unexplored.

If you would like a tropical holiday on an island hideaway, or a romantic honeymoon getaway, then Bangaram might be your ideal destination or as part of a package including time in the Kerala part of India.

You need to appreciate this island hideaway, while ideal for a romantic honeymoon getaway, or for folks who need to play at being castaways, it is not at all for folk attempting to find luxury. If you need the accoutrements of a 5 star resort, just don’t go.

Bangaram itself contains thirty sheds which contains a number of family sheds in twin/double cottages. There are no TVs, phones or air-conditioning, and to complete the island getaway feeling there are no newspapers so you will be fully out of effective contact with the strains of the modern world. Each shed is tiled, on the beach, and has a palm thatched veranda, ensuite lavatory, ceiling fan and a refrigerator. The accommodation is straightforward but comfy, but please note there is no hot water!!

The epicentre of Bangaram Island resort is the eaterie shed that has been built around a central pole and made from bamboos and palm fronds. The food at the resort for lunch and dinner is a bit Indian, and a bit Continental, and terribly much seafood based. The food is with no exceptions outstanding.

Breakfast includes cereals, eggs, Indian dishes and a large amount of fresh fruit.

At night there is a barbecue on the beach, and the likelihood to eat outside overlooking the moon shining on the lagoon Bangaram Island resort is the last place where alcohol is permitted in the Lakshadweep Islands, and the beach bar is the centre of the evening activity. It serves lager and cocktails and will remain open until the guests have had enough!!.

The Isle Of Harris And Hebrides Vacations

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Staying on the beach for most of my vacation isn’t something I would consider. Please don’t misunderstand me, I really do enjoy relaxing on a sunny beach, however, I also like to explore a little inland too. I like to soak in the atmosphere, I like to sample the local food and culture. If the truth be known I simply enjoy visiting new places each year and I try very hard attempting to discover somewhere 100% unique and different. Most probably this is why I so thoroughly enjoy visiting the Hebridean island called the Isle of Harris and why I frequently decide to stay in self catering cottages on the Isle of Harris.

The Isle of Harris is a tiny island situated just off the west of Scotland. Harris is one of hundreds of small islands  known widely as the Outer Hebrides, although to be 100% accurate the UK postal address is the Western Isles. Accepted as either/or the Western Isles or the Outer Hebrides the islands are extremely beautiful and interestingly unique. For those tourists who enjoy spending time on a sandy beach Harris has a multitude to choose from and all are wonderful and nearly always deserted. It seems as though ’round each twist and turn you are greeted with an awesome sight. The Isle of Harris roads are drastically different to those experienced on the mainland of Scotland stretches of single track road are common and you will often be forced to used passing places to allow oncoming traffic to pass but also to let traffic from behind to pass. All you really need to do is come to a stop on the left of the road. If the vehicle wishing to get past is very big and the passing place is on your right hand side you may pull up into it to allow the said vehicle pass easily but take great care not to drive off the edge of the road too much.

One of the primary reasons folk visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the islands culture and landscape. The culture of the Isle of Harris has, over 100’s of years been immensely influenced by the Celtic, Norse, English and Scottish races. Nowadays in general most people speak in the Gaelic language and although many talk in English, it is commonly their 2nd language. The Harris people are amongst the friendliest on the planet and the hospitality is extremely well known. The Harris folk are extremely proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and go to some length to keep the place clean and tidy so it is immensely important to minimise your own mess.

On the Isle of Harris there are some of the most incredibly beautiful golden sandy beaches in the whole of Scotland, and many folk believe the whole of Great Britain. You will, most probably, notice how crystal clear the waters are and it is true to say that the beaches on the Isle of Harris are incredibly clean. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid debris washing up from ships in the Atlantic ocean but happily there isn’t a great deal.

If you are currently deciding about visiting Harris the why not consider staying in a Harris self catering house please visit http://www.isleofharrisselfcateringhouse.co.uk/
