Capital Comedy Gold At London Hotels

Monday, October 4th, 2010

If you’re looking for a chance to soak up a bit of culture and have a good time, it’s definitely worth thinking about booking a city break to London. The capital’s world-renowned comedy clubs are often overlooked amidst all the bright lights of London’s theatreland, but those visitors who opt for a night of stand-up rarely leave the capital feeling shortchanged on entertainment value. A night out to a stand-up comedy show followed by a stay at one of the most luxurious London hotels is the perfect way to spend an autumn getaway.

Despite the fact that the Edinburgh festival is drawing to a close, there’s still plenty going on south of the border, and London’s comedy clubs offer star-studded line-ups throughout the autumn and winter months. The Soho Theatre, for example, is a perfect place to check out some of the country’s very best comedians before heading out for a night on the tiles in London’s West End.

Leicester Square is probably the best place to enjoy an evening of unrivalled hilarity with friends, and it’s long been a Mecca for comedy lovers and aspiring performers looking to tread the boards on some of the country’s most famous clubs. The Comedy Store in Leicester Square, for example, is where some of the biggest names in the business started out, including Alexei Sayle.

If you fancy doing something a bit different, why not drop in to The Boat Show on Victoria Embankment? It’s hard to think of a more interesting venue to see comedy than a refurbished paddle steamer moored on the Thames. Situated in the heart of the city, directly opposite the London Eye and close to some of the best London hotels a night at The Boat Show is an unforgettable experience.

Those willing to travel further afield could stay in East London, which is soon to host the annual Greenwich Comedy Festival. This year’s performers include Bill Bailey, Ed Byrne, Phil Jupitus and many more. Visitors can pass the daytime at local attractions such as the Cutty Sark, Greenwich Observatory and National Maritime Museum before taking in a night of comedy and retiring to one of the many East London hotels.
