Holiday Rivals Bring us to the Spa

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

We are not the type of family that go abroad every year, it just works out way to much. We are a regular working class family, who can just about afford to pay the bills, eat and drink. Our usual holidays just consist of visiting a caravan park out of season and spending a bit of time together.

My story started when we agreed to enter a family holiday exchange event, where we had to take a random family on holiday with us and then they took us on holiday. When we initially applied we never ever dreamt of being picked, but then we suddenly received a phone call and were so happy.

When we initially met the family they come across as very pleasant although they were a lot wealthier then us, I knew that we could have got along a huge amount. First things first was they came on holiday with us, we took them to the caravan park. After a few days I could really see that they were not happy at all, they were not used to living a hard life, but I respect them for putting up with it.

As time got closer and closer I started to get anxious and happy because I knew that the family were going to take us on holiday abroad, something that I had never done before. When they announced we were off to some Caribbean spa holidays I was jumping with joy. When we arrived it was like absolute paradise in the sun. The next seven days were like something that I had never before experienced.

Since returning back I now go out of my way to make sure that I visit spa hotels every single year, sometimes even twice a year.

Could It Be That The Recession Is Water Off A Ducks Back For Spas?

Friday, August 28th, 2009

You might think that during a global economic downturn, health spas would suffer from loss of custom. You might be under the impression that because everyone is watching what they spend very closely, there would be no room for loose spending on sheer luxuries. You might be surprised to learn then that the International Spa Assosication (ISPA) has suggested recently that health spa are recession proof. They then backed this up with figures that showed visits to health spas in 2008 were up a whopping 16% on 2007 statistics. So how and why is this case?

ISPA has said that spas will survive simply because they are adaptable and are able to offer people what they think they want depending on the current climate. What is meant by this is that a spa will offer people indulgent and pampering treatments when everything is going well and they have lots of money. They offer luxury manicures and indulgent body wraps, selling the concept of ‘why not? You’ve earned it’.However, the same offerings would not go down well in a recession. People would not buy into the idea of treating themselves or spending money of luxuries they do not need. So spas then need to use another angle.

Spas can claim to offer people exactly what they need when they are suffering from a period of high stress or anxiety. A full body massage is usually the first thing they push, along with the suggestion that it will remove all the tension from your body and get you back on your feet again. Instead of pampering facials, you can now get a uplifting exfoliating scrub to get rid of all that old bad skin and emerge a brand new butterfly with a fresh outlook on life and a positive attitude towards any problems you may be facing
