Staying In Liverpool And 3 Superb Visitor Attractions Worth Visiting

Liverpool, once the British Empire’s second city, has, since the Second World War been in decline. In recent years there has been a marked increase in investment with the centre of the city undergoing regeneration. In 2008 Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture throughout the full twelve months there were numerous events ranging from world class concerts to unique art exhibitions. No longer the European Capital of Culture what is there to bring in visitors to this lively city? Well there are certainly a number of new hotels to satisfy all markets with accommodation ranging from inexpensive Liverpool bed & breakfast to first class 5 star luxury hotels. In the following article I introduce you to 3 attractions in the city.

The Tate Livierpool

Stood at the Liverpool’s waterfromt, as part of the Albert Dock complex, is Tate Liverpool. Since opening in 1988, the Tate, for a short period of time, was the largest gallery of contemporary and modern art in the United Kingdom, besides London. The Tate is a highly popular visitor attraction in Liverpool, catering for over 600,000 visitors through its’ doors each year. The gallery is in one of the 5 converted warehouses orignally converted by James Stirling. However, the building had to undergo further refurbishment in1988 to create more gallery space. In 2007 the foyer was redesigned, giving the gallery a  more modern appearance and better proportions in the reception area.

Albert Dock Complex

Liverpool’s Albert Dock was named after Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg, who opened the docks in 1846. The docks were {very busy over the years,~Over the years the docks were very busy}, but eventually had to close to shipping in 1972. For many years the docks lay quiet and derelict, until the 1980’s when they were redeveloped with funding from the Merseyside Development Corporation. The dock consisted of five warehouse buildings, all of which are Grade I listed, making the Albert Dock complex the largest set of Grade I listed building in the United Kingdom. The docks are now home to a number of attractions, including the Tate Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

The Liverpool Anglican Cathedral

Liverpool is celebrated for having two cathedrals: the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. When John Charles Rye was assigned Bishop of Liverpool in 1880, ironically Liverpool was not is possession of a cathedral at that time. Eventually, after a lot of deliberation, the powers that be agreed that a cathedral was needed. In 1902, they chose to hold an open competition for the design of the cathedral. The winning design was chosen in 1903, and astonishingly, was a proposal by student Giles Gilbert Scott, who had no preceding building experience. Another architect, George F. Bodley, was nominated to work with Scott, and oversee all building works and designs. King Edward VII laid the foundation stone in 1904, and in 1910, the first part of the cathedral, the Lady Chapel, was finished.

Harris Vacations And Some Useful Info

Is your family deliberating about having a vacation in the British Isles? Even though nearly all people having a vacation in Britain decide to stay in popular places like London, others prefer to have a vacation in Scotland. In the article below I discuss the Isle of Harris and why it is such a fantastic destination for vacations.

While London may be home to some of the most fascinating museums and galleries in Great Britain  and some of the world’s most famous visitor attractions  the capital of England will not appeal to everyone.

Some tourists much prefer more relaxed, and far less hectic, vacations and other folk much prefer vacations with a little more action for example sporting vacations. Interestingly the island of Harris, in Scotland’s Western Isles, is superb for both kinds of tourist.

Like a great many others sun bathing on the beach for the whole of my summer vacation isn’t my idea of the perfect vacation. Please don’t misunderstand me, my family and I often spend time on beaches, and the Isle of Harris certainly is home to some of the most incredible beaches in Britain, however, I also like to spend time visiting other places while on vacation. I thoroughly enjoy taking in the atmosphere, I also like to experience the local culture and especially enjoy sampling the food. If the truth is to be known each year I enjoy visiting new places and I go to great lengths trying to find something or somewhere totally different. Most probably this is why I enjoy visits to the island in the Hebrides known as the Isle of Harris and why I regularly choose to book a self catering house on the Isle of Harris.

One of the main reasons people travel to the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the landscape and culture of the islands. The Isle of Harris culture has, over hundreds of years been subtly influenced by the English, Scottish, Celtic and Norse races. These days the vast majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and although some speak English, it is often their 2nd language. The Harris people are amongst the friendliest in the world and the hospitality is known across the world. The people of the Isle of Harris are incredibly proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and try very hard to keep the place tidy so it is incredibly important to minimise your own mess.

It is incredibly important to keep in mind that discarded rubbish doesn’t just make the place look unsightly it is also highly dangerous to wild creatures.

A further point to know is that the roads on the Isle of Harris are not the same as elsewhere in Scotland or the UK single track roads are very common and you will need to know how to use passing places to safely let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. Just keep it in mind that you come to a halt on the left. If the vehicle wishing to get past you is large and the passing place is on your right hand side you can pull up into it to let the said vehicle pass easily but be careful not to end up off the road too much.

What You Can Do When Camping

Camping with your family or friends is a better way to spend your holiday because you can save more money and still have a great time. The main reason is because you will see that there is a lot you can do while you are camping. Some of the great activities you can do are listed below.

The most common thing to do when camping is experiencing a wild adventure. This is all about the activities of hunting, fishing, and hiking. You are sure to get to witness a lot of different animals out in the wild. As you go on your hike you are going to get to see everything including fish on the lake, deers running all over the place and of course birds in the sky. This is something you can do while camping and even though it is really basic, it is a lot of fun.

Getting to capture all the different wildlife and plants is something fun you can do while camping. Look for trees, leaves, flowers, berries, wild animals and other things you may see in the wilderness then take pictures of them. You may use this outdoor activity as a game so all campers can enjoy taking pictures together.

In the evening, there are also fun things you may do. You can share interesting, adventure stories, memorable experiences or sing and dance. Before everyone goes to bed, you can take the time to reallly appreciate the beautiful galaxy with all the stars in the sky. If you are on top of a mountain where you see the city lights that will be a great view you can watch at night.

Another option you may do while camping is geocaching. This is also known as going on a treasure hunt. Use a GPS device to find any hidden treasures in the wilderness. If this is impossible for you to make, then make your own treasure hunting game. A lot of people are going to get to experience the fun of geocaching.

All of these are fun and exciting activities that are available for you to do with the whole family or friends when you go camping.  So, do some or all of these activities when camping.
